Dunnottar castle

My hubby with his colleagues planned out this adventure to Dunnottar castle perched on the giant rock near Stonehaven, Aberdeen.

The ruins was once a fortress for Earl Marischal.

There are two access trails to Dunnottar. The shortest is a 800 metre path with several staircases from a car park on the coastal road off the A92. The other is a three kilometre walk from Stonehaven Harbour along a path that heads south along the cliff top to the castle. This path is narrow and steep in parts and has expansive sea views.

My hubby chose the former route.

yeee hawwww...!!!

Climbing down some stairs are never so tiring.

Almost there...

The beauty!!!

The sea view

--Facts file--

The word Dun means place of strength. Its original name was Dun fother meaning fort on the low country

It was built by Sir William Keith

It is above 160 feet from sea level

Many important people are associated with this castles namely, Charles II, Mary Queen of Scots, William Wallac, St Ninian and Marquis of Montrose.

The castle have guarded the Scottish Crown jewels including a scepter and sword which were the honors of Scotland.

Hamlet have been the filming location here starring Mel Gibson.

Interestingly a girl ghost and deer hound have been witnessed by many. My hubby didn't dare to adventure into that and sneaked out before dark.

--Tips--

No cafeteria and food store is there...so u must be knowing what to pack up when ur belly hurts.

On rainy day and other weather conditions the castle may be closed. Check out the details or call before you plan out the trip.

Since there are lot of stairs and steep road, sadly, handicapped n old aged people are not suitable for this site.
